Independent Collaborative Attorneys of Central Pennsylvania was founded by a group of independent experienced family law attorneys who sought to offer their clients an alternative to the usual court process for resolving issues relating to separation and divorce, parenting, and child custody. Recognizing that the court process often causes increased hostility and conflict within a family and that it places the responsibility for the decisions involved in restructuring a family in the hands of third parties, these attorneys wanted to provide another option to divorcing couples and divorced or unmarried parents who were experiencing continuing conflict over matters relating to their children. To do so, they obtained specialized training in the practice of Collaborative Law. While new to the Central Pennsylvania area at the time, this very different method of resolving conflicts was being successfully used in many other areas of the country and in Canada. Since then, many other Central Pennsylvania family law attorneys have joined the original group in making this service available to clients, and numerous cases have been resolved through the Collaborative Law process.

All ICACP member attorneys are also members of the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals.
